Gentle Giant release new video to celebrate 50th anniversary of Octopus

From Loudersound.

Gentle Giant have released a new video montage to celebrate the release of their fourth studio album, Octopus, which celebrates its 50th anniversary today. You can watch the video, created by singer Derek Shulman’s son Noah, in full below.

Octopus was originally released on this day in 1972. It was the band’s final album released with founding member Phil Shulman and the first with new drummer John Weathers, who had replaced Malcolm Mortimore, and who would remain with the band until their dissolution in 1980.

It was also the band’s second release of 1972, having released Three Friends in April of that year, and represents the band at the height of their impressive powers.

The album came housed in a sleeve designed by Roger Dean, although in North America, where the album wasn’t released until February 1973, the band’s label, Columbia, chose to use an illustration by artist Charles White, of an octopus in. ajar, the original versions of which were die cut.

Octopus would reach No. 170 in the US album charts.

GENTLE GIANT Acquiring The Taste (1971 first UK issue 8-track vinyl LP on the Vertigo 'swirl' label, gatefold picture sleeve complete with swirl inner. This album took the band into more experimental & darker areas but is still their own recognisable sound - a rich blend of hard rock & orchestration - with hints of influences from King Crimson & Van Der Graaf Generator. With the sleeve showing just a little light general wear. The labels remain very clean with minimal spindle marksand the vinyl looks barely played)

GENTLE GIANT In A Glass House (1973 UK first press 6-track LP on the black & silver WWA label [this album did not come out on the Vertigo swirl label in the UK], for many their finest record. Comes housed in a striking die-cut textured sleeve complete with PVC window, art print card insert. Because the textured sleeves were never laminated they were prone to storage wear with age, however this one has suffered only minor shelfwear with alight corner creasing and is overall in fantastic condition for its style and age. The vinyl too is nice & clean & shows only minor cosmetic evidence of light play, a great copy of this Prog rock gem! WWA002)

GENTLE GIANT Octopus (1972 UK first press Vertigo 'swirl' label 8-track LP, the formidable fourth album which marked the last involvement of eldest Shulman brother Phil & the first outing for third drummer John Weathers who stayed with the band thereafter, engineered by Martin Rushent [T-Rex, Yes, Buzzcocks, Stranglers], this is a cult classic among prog fans. Includes the brain-melting complexity of 'Knots', full of interlocking vocal harmonies wedded to bold symphonic rock sounds. The gatefold sleeve is a classic Roger Dean design & complete with the die-cut swirl inner. The cover is Excellent with very few signs of shelfwear, however the vinyl is super clean with barely a hint of play. Highly recommended)
