Audiophile collectables at eil.com this week, includes AC/DC, Jeff Beck, Wham & more

For anyone who collects vinyl, we know that some of the most highly wanted pressings tend to be those classed as Audiophile.
Those with the best hi-fi equipment will always want the best quality sounding pressing available, be that high quality 180 gram or heavier vinyl, CD’s, Super Audio CD’s, SHM-CD’s, DVD-Audio Discs and more, from companies like DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Nautilus, Nexus, Simply Vinyl or Nimbus.
AUDIOPHILE VINYL
‘True Fidelity’ vinyl is perhaps the ultimate format for the audiophile. Issues are taken from original master tapes for pure ‘as intended sound’, and production techniques such as half-speed mastering, quadraphonic sound and special formulated virgin vinyl are common in most audiophile releases.
There are many labels who issue audiophile recordings, but only a few specialize in it. Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab (MFSL) have a variety of series including ‘Original Master Recordings’
[OMR] and ‘Ultra High-Quality Recordings’ [UHQR]. Other important audiophile labels include Nautilus, Direct-Disk Labs, Sheffield Lab and Wilson Audio.
AUDIOPHILE COMPACT DISCS
With the development of the compact disc so typically came the development of its audiophile counterpart. Again, there are specialist labels, there are varying techniques (gold discs, layered discs, high-density discs) and there are varying opinions on the listening pleasure! But we’re here to bring all those quandaries together.

An underrated album that featured a killer line-up [Cozy Powell, Max Middleton] prompting some inspired guitar playing from the man himself, alongside production from Steve Cropper [Booker T/MuscleShoals], originally released in 1972; in jewel case with booklet picture sleeve, within an individually numbered stickered die-cut picture card slipcase AFZ5219).

DIRE STRAITS Communique (2019 limited edition Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab 5-track 2-LP, mastered by Krieg Wunderlich at MFSL on the Gain 2 Ultra Analog System, specially plated and pressed on 180g High-Definition Vinyl at 45RPM. Heavyweight gatefold picture sleeve with original album art, individually numbered in gold on the back and sealed inside its perforated loose bag. The ultimate analogue reference of their 1979 second album!).

WHAM Greatest Hits – Japanese Singles Collection (2020 Japanese-only limited edition Blu-Spec CD 2 [an audio Compact Disc format using Blu-Ray technology and playable on all CD players]/DVD set. The 17-track CD features the singles in chronological order, and includes Bad Boys (Extended Club Mix), I’m Your Man (Extended Stimulation Mix), A Ray Of Sunshine (Specially Recorded For ‘The Tube’) and Last Christmas (Instrumental), and the 15-track NTSC All-Region DVD has all the videos and more. Slim double jewel case with a booklet detailing images of all their single covers, descriptions, lyrics, and an obi-strip.Remains in ‘Brand New’ factory sealed condition. This example also includes custom ‘Not For Sale’ small A5 plastic folder, featuring the compilation montage artwork, these were available with initial copies only! SICP31384~5).

EARTH WIND & FIRE That’s The Way Of The World (Rare 2005 US limited edition 13-track Mobile Fidelity Audiophile Ultra Disc UHR Gain 2, digitally remastered 13-track Gold SACD [Super Audio CD], playable on all SACD and CD players, featuring the previously unreleases ‘Original Sketches’. Housed in its original custom case with limited edition 30th Anniversary Ultradisc sticker, lyric booklet picture sleeve UDSACD2011).

AC/DC Iron Man 2 (2010 UK limited edition 2-LP set pressed on 180gram Vinyl – Through a unique collaboration between Marvel Studios and Columbia Records, AC/DC’s music is featured in Marvel Studios’ ‘Iron Man 2’, the sequel to the 2008 blockbuster film. The soundtrack features 15 classic AC/DC songs selected from ten of the band’s studio albums, including ‘Highway To Hell’ and ‘Let There Be Rock’. Housed in a foil-stamped gatefold picture sleeve with a hype-sticker attached to the back, and printed inners. The sleeve displays come light creases to the two right corners, whilst the vinyl looks barely played, overall an excellent example).
