Jack White/Third Man Records Aims To Get The First Vinyl Record In Space!!

…yes you read it right, to celebrate the labels seventh birthday the label have made  a gold plated master of Carl Sagan’s ‘A Glorious Dawn’ (originally released as a humble 7″ back in 2009) – how’s it getting there? On the ‘Icarus Craft’ of course….a custom built ‘space-proof’ turntable which will be attached to a high altitude balloon! Here’s a few pics, find out more at Third Man Records

What do we think of this? A harmless slice of Jack White flavoured eccentricity, great marketing ploy or just a bit of a silly idea?

  1. If he’s aiming for “the first vinyl record in space” then he’s 39 years too late. The Voyager Golden Records went up on the Voyager spacecraft in 1977.

    • Hi Jason, that’s a very good point – although if you wanted to be a pedant I’m not sure the disc attached to Voyager was ‘vinyl’, wikipedia has this to say, “The record is constructed of gold-plated copper. The record’s cover is aluminum and electroplated upon it is an ultra-pure sample of the isotope uranium-238” – Interestingly Carl Sagan is involved with both, what aliens will make of that who knows! Thanks
