‘You and I’ features two original recordings alongside cover versions of The Smiths and Led Zeppelin
An album of unheard Jeff Buckley material will be released on March 11 next year.
The tracks on ‘You and I’ were discovered in the Sony Music archives while staff at the label researched the 20th anniversary edition of Buckley’s album ‘Grace’.
Most of the songs were recorded in February 1993 at Steve Addabbo’s Shelter Island Sound studio and include a number of covers, including songs by The Smiths, Led Zeppelin and Bob Marley.
The album features two pieces of original music: the first-ever studio recording of ‘Grace’ and ‘Dream of You and I’, a song described as “mysterious and haunting” in a press release.
The other eight tracks on the 10-track album are cover versions. Buckley’s take on ‘Just Like A Woman’ by Bob Dylan opens the record while both ‘I Know It’s Over’ and ‘The Boy with the Thorn in His Side’ by The Smith feature.
Elsewhere, tracks originally written by Louis Jordan, Jevetta Steele and Bukka White feature alongside a cover of ‘Night Flight’ by Led Zeppelin.
Jeff Buckley’s recording of ‘Everyday People’ will also be made available for Record Store Day as a limited edition 7″ with the B-side featuring the original recording by Sly & the Family Stone.
‘You and I’ has been overseen by the artist’s mother, Mary Guibert with the performances never bootlegged or released to the public in any form.
