Keith Richards may have quit cocaine nearly a decade ago, but says he still enjoys a marijuana wake-up call.

The 71-year-old singer told Mojo magazine, “I smoke regularly, an early morning joint. Strictly Californian.”

Although he still lives in the Sussex home he bought in the 1960s, and has an apartment in Manhattan, Richards praised the legalisation of cannabis in certain American states: “One of the most pleasant things to watch is a map of America [showing states where the drug is legal], where it goes, green… green… green

“Whether it’s a good thing in the long run, I don’t know.”

Richards gave up cocaine in 2006 after falling from a tree and undergoing brain surgery, and hasn’t taken heroin since 1978. He told Mojo that he still drank, but said “other than that, I’m pretty straight.”

The musician said he was hopeful for the Rolling Stones’ future: “Will we record and tour again? I think we will. We’ll do this year, then go into the studio.”

He added that Stones frontman Mick Jagger wants to record again after “blurting it out in a meeting.” Richards suggests that the veteran band may return to the studio at the end of 2015.
