Gentle Giant release new video to celebrate 50th anniversary of Octopus

From Loudersound.

Gentle Giant have released a new video montage to celebrate the release of their fourth studio album, Octopus, which celebrates its 50th anniversary today. You can watch the video, created by singer Derek Shulman’s son Noah, in full below.

Octopus was originally released on this day in 1972. It was the band’s final album released with founding member Phil Shulman and the first with new drummer John Weathers, who had replaced Malcolm Mortimore, and who would remain with the band until their dissolution in 1980.

It was also the band’s second release of 1972, having released Three Friends in April of that year, and represents the band at the height of their impressive powers.

The album came housed in a sleeve designed by Roger Dean, although in North America, where the album wasn’t released until February 1973, the band’s label, Columbia, chose to use an illustration by artist Charles White, of an octopus in. ajar, the original versions of which were die cut.

Octopus would reach No. 170 in the US album charts.

GENTLE GIANT Live - Playing The Fool (1977 UK 9-track double vinyl LP on the green Chrysalis label, the official live album released after the band's 8th album 'Interview' featuring some superb highlights from the first eight albums showcased in the band's highly accomplished and unique way of brilliantly modifying their tracks for live performance - as much due to their continuing innovation to the sheer complexity of the original studio version. Including the excellent 'Excerpts From Octopus' and ablistering amalgamation of 'Peel The Paint' & 'I Lost My Head' demonstrating just one of the many clever marriages of tracks for their astonishing multi-instrumental live sets. The gatefold picture sleeve which has a great inner spread design using a constellation to map the band's tour comes complete with the hard to find booklet. The sleeve has only minor wear and all discs remain in near as new condition. Overall a stunning copy and a stunning performance CTY1133)

GENTLE GIANT Acquiring The Taste (Rare 1971 UK first press 8-track vinyl LP on the Vertigo 'swirl' label - This album took the band into more experimental & darker areas but is still their own recognisable sound - a rich blend of hard rock & orchestration - with hints of influences from King Crimson and Van Der Graaf Generator. Complete with the poly-lined 'swirl' inner and lyrics printed across the inside, the gatefold picture sleeve has some light shelfwear scuffing to the edges / corners and has a vintage price sticker attached to the front, while also displays some spots of age discolouration but its pretty damn good considering it was never laminated. With just a few light signs of play visible, the vinyl remains in fantastic Excellent condition for its over FIFTY years. Now hard to find in any condition!)
