Gentle Giant release previously unseen interview footage from 1980

From Loudersound.

Gentle Giant have released previously unseen and unedited footage of the band being interviewed backstage at the Gusman Cultural Center in Miami in June 1980, which you can watch below.

“It amazes me that there are still things to be discovered,”e says Noah Shulman, son of Derek, and the man who put together the Proclamation fan video earlier this year that saw the surviving members of the band reunite (virtually) for the first time since 1980.

Jack Skelly who compiled Gentle Giant’s Tour History had chronicled the events of that evening:

“Interestingly, Derek introduced the song Knots to the crowd as a “psychedelic” song. One fan claims Giant looked ill during this concert, even remembering John Weathers repeatedly throwing up into a bucket on stage during the show. As it turns out, the fan was correct. The band had eaten some bad burgers beforehand, jokingly described by Derek in a backstage press interview after the gig, as “Kentucky Fried Rat”. This also explains why Derek frequently left the stage when he was not singing. The food poisoning hit the players when the opening act, a group called Hoochie, took the stage, and continued through all of Giant’s set. Gary recalls this difficult gig, but says they still managed to put on a good show, even though they played without their own lighting and sound rig. This equipment was, unfortunately, on its way to Houston, the site of the following night’s show.”

GENTLE GIANT Octopus (Mid 70s UK Vertigo spaceship label issue of the 1972 8-track vinyl LP, the formidable fourth album which marked the last involvement of eldest Shulman brother Phil, & the first outing for third drummer John Weathers, whostayed with the band thereafter, engineered by Martin Rushent [T-Rex, Yes, Buzzcocks, Stranglers], this is a cult classic among prog fans. Includes the brain-melting complexity of Knots, full of interlocking vocal harmonies wedded to bold symphonicrock sounds. The gatefold sleeve shows light print wear and a small area of paper loss, with a few spots of discolouration inside the gatefold, whilst the vinyl has just a couple of light hairlines and is excellent. Recommended)

GENTLE GIANT Acquiring The Taste (1971 first UK issue 8-track vinyl LP on the Vertigo 'swirl' label. This album took the band into more experimental & darker areas but is still their own recognisable sound - a rich blend of hard rock & orchestration - with hints of influences from King Crimson & Van Der Graaf Generator, housed in a gatefold picture sleeve with the poly lined 'swirl' die-cut inner. The sleeve displays some minor general wear with some edge & corner scuffing, and has some strange blank ink marks on the back, but still pretty damn good considering it was never laminated. The labels have a few light spindle marks and light signs of age, whilst the vinyl has only a few light signs of play. Overall a Very Good example, making an ideal play copy)

GENTLE GIANT Octopus (Rare 1972 UK first issue 8-track vinyl LP on the Vertigo 'swirl' label, housed in a Roger Dean designed gatefold picture sleeve, complete with die-cut poly-lined 'swirl' inner. The sleeve displays some minor general wear with some discolouration, and edge & corner wear, the spine print is clearly legible. The labels have a few spindle marks and some discolouration, whilst the vinyl remains clean with only a few light surface scuffs and hairlines. Overall this isa Very Goog example of this progressive masterpiece!)
