This copy of the Edgar Broughton Band’s third album is a very rare 1971 UK first issue 9-track stereo LP with ‘Gramophone Co’ perimeter text and WITHOUT the EMI boxed logo on either side of the labels confirming a first edition.
It has stamped matrices ending A4/B4. Hipgnosis-designed textured, unlaminated gatefold ‘skin-like’ sleeve printed by Garrod & Lofthouse [known as ‘The Meat Album’ amongst fans] with lyrics inside and company catalogue inner, featuring guests The Ladybirds, Johnny van Derek, David Bedford, P. Harold Fatt, and a certain Mike Oldfield on Mandolin.
Condition wise the sleeve shows some spine rubbing and a little edgewear with the odd light surface scuff to the panels but for a sleeve of this design and age without the protective laminate of many of its contemporaries it’s held up remarkably well with no rips, tears or splits or writing, only very mild fading on the inner spread, spine text still legible if partial, with all other font bold and clear, ultimately grading EX. Though overall an impressive sleeve, the show stealer is the vinyl with the labels revealing only one or two very minor spine rubs seen only when held up to the light with a couple more detectable on Side 1 but who’s counting, they’re minimal and that means light, careful, occasional play is proven.
The disc itself underlines this with just the odd paper scuff or tiny hairline to be found on close inspection and again if we’re getting technical a couple more are evident on Side 1 [you’ll likely have to look afresh to find them each time], overall scoring an EX+/M- grade.
A fantastic example of this extremely rare first edition psych-rocker, surely booked in for short-stay only, collectors eyes front!
