Johnny Marr teams up with Fender to teach fans how to play The Headmaster Ritual

Johnny Marr has shared a video from his home studio, teaching fans how to play the iconic riff to The Smiths classic, The Headmaster Ritual.

Using his signature Fender Jaguar, Marr breaks down the track in a playthrough video. “I wrote it in a [open] tuning so I had no idea what I was doing when I wrote it and I quite like that,” says Marr in the clip. “I think thats a handy device for cutting out the brain static that gets in the way of coming up with chord changes.”

Marr is the latest to team up with Fender as part of their Artist Check In Series, which has seen playthrough videos from other artists such as Frank Iero from My Chemical Romance, Chris Shiflett from Foo Fighters, and Bethany Consentino from Best Coast. Donations from the project will go to the COVID-19 relief fund, MusiCares, which aims to help artists affected by the ongoing pandemic.
