Nirvana singer wore the item during his last photoshoot

A cardigan worn by Kurt Cobain during the late lead singer’s last photoshoot with Nirvana has sold for $75,000 (£59,000) at auction.

The grey argyle patterned item, which the grunge rock star wore at a pre-In Utero photo session in the summer of 1993, more than doubled its pre-auction estimate of between $10,000 (£8,000) and $20,000 (16,000) on Saturday, Julien’s Auctions said.

Photographs of Cobain wearing the jumper, captured by photographer Jesse Frohman, also featured in his photobook Kurt Cobain: The Last session.

“The shoot was meant to take place in Central Park in New York City, but due to Cobain being sick just hours before, the shoot was relocated to the basement of the hotel where the band was staying,” auction notes for the item revealed.

“Cobain showed up three hours late to the shoot and immediately asked for a bucket due to his nausea.”

Its sale comes 25 years after the iconic singer took his own life on 5 April 1994 in the garage of his home in Seattle, Washington. He was 27.

According to Rolling Stone, Cobain’s widow, Courtney Love, gave the garment to an acquaintance following his funeral.

The jumper’s sale price, despite beating expectations, still falls second behind the amount fetched for Cobain’s green cardigan from Nirvana’s MTV Unplugged performance, which sold for $137,000 (£107,000) at auction in 2015.
