Dick’s Picks: A highly collectable French Joy Division 7″

Released in March 1980 on the tiny French imprint Sordide Sentimental run by Jean-Pierre Turmel and Yves von Bonteean, this is an absolute classic single and the first release of Atmosphere on seven inch as at the time this was a France only release. Limited to just 1578 copies, each one of the lavish package was individually numbered. Following the death of Ian Curtis two months later, this was released in the UK but with an alternate version of She’s Lost control as the B Side.

The jury is still out on whether this should or should not have a poly bag and whether it should or should not have the label logo printed on it, but having had a test pressing [#0000] of this directly from one of the the label founders which DID have a poly bag with logo, it seems fair to assume that some did and some didn’t.

The internal gatefold contains a narrative in French by Jean-Pierre Turmel & a picture of the band by Anton Corbijn. The centre has a tracing paper pocket which housed the 7″ itself, a fold out English translation of the narrative by Paul Buck and a smaller blue insert with just ‘AVERTISSEMENT’ and ‘GESAMTKUNSTWERK’ text.

The glue holding the pocket edges tends to turn brown over time on genuine copies due to the material used,  and generally one of the seams comes unstuck

The labels are silver on black and the disc runs at 33RPM, making this technically an EP called Licht Und Blindheit, although it is often referred to as ‘Sordide Sentimental’, which was actually the label and occasionally as just Atmosphere which was the A Side.

This is a true holy grail Joy Division release, and is just as hard to find as their legendary debut 7″, An Ideal For Living. Find out more about this item here.
