Five essential Christmas movie soundtracks

A staple part of the festive season is watching Christmas movies. Perhaps it’s something family friendly, it may be a comedy, or you may prefer some horror fun on these cold nights. Whatever your preference, most Christmas movies have excellent soundtracks that fit the time of year Below are small selection of our favourites that you need to hear at Christmas.

Douglas Pipes – The Krampus (2015)

This modern take on a classic tale of evil, and punished for being bad is one of the most fun Christmas horror movies in recent memory. The soundtrack by Douglas Pipes (Trick r Treat) puts a twisted spin on some of the classic holiday jingles, along with creating a foreboding sense of dread.

John Williams – Home Alone (1992)

As soon as you hear the main title theme, Somewhere In My Memory, you know what is about to happen with this raucous holiday classic. It is almost as iconic as the the paint can scene from the movie itself, and gives you that warm, nostalgic feel for the first Christmas you sat down and watched it.

Danny Elfman – The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)

Is it a Halloween movie? Is it a Christmas movie? No one really knows, but it doesn’t matter, because Tum Burton’s iconic stop-motion musical is perfect for both. The moment in the movie when Jack Skellington first visit’s Christmas land and sings What’s This? is a true piece of Christmas magic.

Perry Botkin / Morgan Ames – Silent Night, Deadly Night (1984)

This ’80s cult slasher was notoriously panned at the time, and despite having four sequels and a loose remake, it hasn’t aged particularly well. However, the soundtrack is perfect for both the era and the movie. Perry Botkin’s score is suitably creepy, while the original Christmas songs by Morgan Ames bring some light into the dark.

Miles Goodman/Paul Williams – The Muppets Christmas Carol

One of the quintessential family movies at Christmas, which features a fantastic performance by Michael Caine as Ebeneezer Scrooge and the entire Muppets cast. The songs range from uplifting to heartbreaking, adding to the emotional – yet lighthearted – classic Dickens story. Hopefully it will see a vinyl reissue one day.
