Football frenzy is reaching fever pitch once again with the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia in full swing.
The passion that football brings out in its fans is unlike any other, with the feeling of a football match being not too dissimilar to that of a rock concert. It is probably why music has been linked to football for as long as we can remember, especially around the world cup. New Order’s Italia ’90 anthem, World In Motion – complete with John Barnes providing a now timeless rap – captured the spirit of the game, and Keith Allen’s Fat Les’ tongue-in-cheek 1998 cult classic, Vindaloo, parodied the football chant while becoming a favourite in its own right.
John Barnes isn’t the only football player to step behind the microphone, though. Who could forget Lindisfarne’s rerecording of their 1971 track, Fog On The Tyne, which featured an appearance from one Paul Gascoigne. In later years, Former Arsenal player Emmanuel Frimpong teamed up with his cousin, Lethal Bizzle, for a remix of the latter’s grime anthem, Leave It Yeah.
Aside from the national team’s anthems, nearly everyone’s favourite clubs have their own songs to help get their faithful fans behind them. A lot of these have been released on vinyl over the years, and have been a favourite of collectors. Some record collectors or dedicated football fans like to only collect football or sporting themed records, while some remain true and grab the updated versions of their beloved teams’ anthems. The sleeves also look excellent framed, and are perfect way to display your passion for both music and the team you love.
