‘So It Goes’ was a regional TV programme broadcast only in the Manchester area (late at night) and presented by future Factory Records boss Tony Wilson. The Pistols appeared on the last episode of the first series, previous guests included Marianne Faithful, Peter Cook, Kevin Ayers, The Chieftains, Mott the Hoople – a modern crucible of punk it wasn’t, but thanks to Mr Wilson it was satirical, questioning and pretty damn risque for 1976.

The Pistols debut TV performance began with a shout of “get off yer arse”, Messrs Rotten & Co. set out their musical stall with a blistering, brutal and incendiary performance of Anarchy In The U.K. – Charles Shaar Murray described it as “the most utterly immediate thing I’ve ever seen on television” and in September 1976 he was probably right. Here’s the performance in all its ragged, beautiful glory….

*(some people claim 28th August, some 4th September)
