Rarely does a record that has ‘legendary cult status’ live up to its reputation, however, Alex Chilton’s ’70s powerpoppers Big Star’s ‘third’ album does just that. Recorded in 1974 the record was never officially released until 1978 and then without an official tracklisting!
However, don’t let that put you off, unlike the first two Big Star albums ‘Third’, or ‘Sister Lovers’ as it’s also known, is the sound of lead singer/songwriter Alex Chilton coming apart at the seams, All Music guide describe it as a, “shambling wreck of an album” while at the same time “among the most harrowing experiences in pop music; impassioned, erratic, and stark” and “the slow, sinking sound of a band falling apart” – yes it really is that good.
‘Complete Third’ will feature 69 tracks, 29 of which have never been released, out October 14th.
