Adele’s new single, Hello, has sold 1.1m downloads in the US, and becomes the first song with more than a million downloads within its first week. The single, released on 23 October, is the first from the British performer’s third album, and debuted at No 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, a position she also holds on the UK singles chart.
Only one other song has sold more copies in one week since Nielsen Music began counting both digital and physical sales in 1991: Elton John’s Candle in the Wind. The 1997 re-recording, his tribute to Diana, Princess of Wales, sold 3.44m copies in its first week on sale in the October of that year, with another 1.2m the following week. However, those sales came before the digital download era.
