In 1977, a revolution happened. Armed with the nothing more than guitars, drums and bass, the youth were creating a soundtrack that would define a generation known as punk. It was the antithesis to the pomp and grandeur of prog, more hard hitting than watered down pop bands, and a fighting attitude that stuck a middle finger up rock ‘n’ roll. It was the voice of the underdogs, the outcasts, and the disenchanted.
It is fitting, then, that 40 years after the dawn of punk we should pick up a collection that almost serves as a history lesson, and captures the zeitgeist of the era. From raw, three-chord punk and Oi!, to post punk, goth and new wave. Some of the rarities include Joy Division’s highly sought after An Ideal For Living 12”, the long forgotten O Level 7”, East Sheen, and the somewhat avant garde (for the time) end of the punk spectrum, Tubeway Army’s self-titled album on blue vinyl.
Aside from that, there are classic early releases from Wire, Killing Joke, The Damned, The Cure, Crass and more. It truly is one of the best punk collections we have seen in some time, and probably the last we will see in such great condition for a while.
