Ain’t nothing but a jazz thing here at eil.com this week with a vast array of top jazz rare vinyl and CDs coming through the doors, here’s a few to whet your jazz whistle, see them all in our Jazz collectors store.
Per Husby – Peacemaker: Rare 1977 Norwegian-only 9-track LP, a beautiful Euro jazz winner released in very limited numbers by the student society in Trondheim, Norway. Comes housed in a wonderful looking, unique & fully textured picturesleeve. The title piece is a deep, reflective modal number in the Miles tradition & ‘Adgang F.’ is THE standout Jazz-Dance tune. There was a limited CD re-release of this album years ago but with inferior artwork. The sound quality was no match for the original vinyl release either! This example originates from the private collection of a former staff member for Dobells record shop in Charing Cross. The sleeve is Excellent with just the lightest spot of discolouring around the edge & the vinyl is super clean & grades Excellent, with only a few mild paper hairlines not affecting play. Recommended.
Charles Mingus – My Favorite Quintet: Limited edition 1966 US mail order only 7-track mono LP, recorded at the Tyrone Guthrie Theatre & starring ‘saxophonist of tomorrow’ Charles McPherson, Down Beat Poll-winner Dannie Richmond, Jaki Byard & Lonnie Hillyer. This rare edition was privately pressed by the Charles Mingus Enterprises & comes housed in a unique pasted & textured sleeve with ‘this album can be purchased only mail through the address below…’ print on the back. The sleeveis outstanding with no seam splits or writing & merely the very lightest evidence of its age, all text clear as daylight. The vinyl is super clean & Excellent with little suggestion of play.
Coleman Hawkins – Soul: 1959 UK 7-track mono LP also featuring Kenny Burrell [Guitar], Ray Bryant [Piano], Wendell Marshall [Bass] & Osie Johnson [Drums], front laminated flipback picture sleeve. Apart from the beginnings of a split to the top seam, the flimsy sleeve shows just a little light shelfwear with a bit of edge scuffing & the vinyl remains in excellent condition & looks barely played.
