To give you, our customers, the chance to get to know the team behind eil.com, we like to let show you what we are about and what we have been listening to lately. This week is a member of our stock addition team, Laura.
What are your top five albums of all time?
Guillemots – Through The Windowpane
Arcade Fire – Funeral
St Paul & The Broken Bones – Sea Of Noise
Broken Records – Until The Earth Begins To Part
Editors – An End Has A Start
No matter how embarrassing, what was the first piece of music you bought?
I can’t remember for sure, but I would guess it being something by Kylie or Jason. 90s pop at its finest
What have you been listening to this week?
Calvin Harris – Funk Wav Bounce Vol 1: Can’t stop listening to this album at the moment, it is Aural Summer.
The Frames – Set List: I love any excuse to listen to Glen Hansard. He is a storyteller and I love this live album which was recorded 15 years ago.
Anderson .Paak – Malibu: A recommendation from my Cousin in Canada last year lead me to this album. Another great summery record. I saw him in London in April and he owns the stage.
Volcano Choir (Justin Vernon & co) – Repave: I saw a promo copy of Comrade and liked the sound of their name so gave it a listen and immediately loved it. I go through phases of listening to the album a lot. This is one of those phases.
I heard a local band on a BBC Radio Kent Introducing programme earlier this year called Mosa Wild. They have only released the one song so far: ‘Smoke’ which I really like and have been recommending to friends.
The Slow Show: I adore this Manchester band. If you like strings sections, choirs, brass and a unique attention-grabbing voice, you might like them too. Check out ‘Dresden’ and ‘Bloodline’.
Glass Animals: ZABA. Still love this album. I listen to it a lot while working.
What album would you recommend customers check out if they haven’t heard it before?
Personally, I will always recommend my favourite album, the debut by Guillemots: Through the Windowpane. If you are a fan of great classic British pop with hints of jazz and string sections, you might love this album. It holds a very special place in heart. Through this band’s music, I have had some of the best times of my life and made friends for life. This album is a journey. Its opening is soft & gentle and then hit you with a blast of brass and melodies that you won’t be able to help but move your feet to. The album closer ‘Sao Paulo’ will always be my favourite song. 10+ years later, it remains at the top spot and I can’t see that changing anytime soon. I also have a song lyric from this album tattooed on my right foot.
What are the top five gigs you have attended?
So many to choose from but here’s a selection of some of the best gigs I’ve been to:
Guillemots + BBC Concert Orchestra (Electric Proms) – London Roundhouse – October 2006. One of MANY times I’ve seen my favourite band, but this was the first time I got to see them live and it holds many special memories.
Glen Hansard – Shepherds Bush Empire, London October 2015 – I love him and every gig he does is always incredible special. Whether he serenading your heart or unleashing his almighty roar, he holds his in the palm of his hand.
Broken Records – Queens Hall, Edinburgh – August 2014. Again, another band that I’ve loved and seen many times, but this was a good one spent with friends and a few Thistly Cross Ciders in their hometown 😉
Editors – Village Underground, London 2013 – A small (comparatively to some of the venues they play now) gig to celebrate the release of their ‘The Weight Of Your Love’ album, a room packed full of fans. Stood at the barrier,
everyone dancing & bouncing alongside one another. One of the best (& sweatiest) gigs I’ve seen them do.
Blondie – Latitude Festival 2008. My friend & I was squashed like sardines in the packed tent but it was one of the happiest hours I’ve spent at a festival.
If you could take home one item we have in stock today, what would it be and why?
I’d quite like to be able to frame a copy of this Foo Fighters LP at home.
Finally, does music really sound better on vinyl?
I don’t have a turntable myself due to lack of space at home but I would say it depends on what you’re listening to and your mood. The crackles can really enhanced the music and mood but other times, not so much.
