On this day in 1962, The Beach Boys would release their debut album, Surfin’ Safari. A far cry from the dizzying heights they would reach in the years that followed, but it showed the promise of greatness from the young Californian group of musicians.
Almost a year earlier after Brian Wilson and Mike Love composed the track, Surfin’. After bringing in Dennis Wilson, Carl Wilson, and Al Jardine, the group achieved mild success with the single, and eventually signed to Capitol Records after they heard a demo recording courtesy of the Wilson brothers father, Murry. They would then go on to release Surfin’ Safari as a single, which became a hit along with the b-side, 409.
That was really the extent of The Beach Boys fame at the time, as another single from the album, Ten Little Indians, failed to make the same impact. Overall, it was not a strong album, but for an album written entirely by The Beach Boys themselves, and Brian Wilson displaying early signs of his production and arrangement prowess. This would later shine on albums such as Pet Sounds and Smile, which would catapult the band from Hawthorne to international stars.
