The legendary UK shop/indie label are celebrating their 40th anniversary this year, look out for a special event on March 8th at the Rough Trade East shop hosted by Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore…..see below for full details…
The Event…
Please join us in celebrating the launch of the Rough Trade 40th Anniversary journal, with a very special event at Rough Trade East. Hosted by Thurston Moore, and featuring an ‘In Conversation’ with The Raincoats and author/poet Lavinia Greenlaw.
We are also excited to host a reading from author Richard Milward, and a live performance from 1965 Records’ Black Peaches, as well as DJ sets from James Endeacott (1965 Records), Jeff Barrett (Heavenly Recordings) + Simon Raymonde (Bella Union).
The Journal…
A celebration of 40 years of an iconic music company’s existence, told through the stories of over 100 contributors from the world of music, literature, art and film featuring exclusive content from Brian Eno, Viv Albertine, Josh T Pearson, Jarvis Cocker, Mark Ronson, Bill Drummond, John Grant, Kate Tempest,The Raincoats, David Shrigley, Green Gartside and many more. With jacket illustration from London based art collective Le Gun and a foreword from Thurston Moore, whose Ecstatic Peace Library imprint are co-publishers.
The Exhibition…
On top of all this, we’ll also be previewing a brand new exhibition from London art Collective Le Gun:
“The Rough and the Smooth: LE GUN and 40 years of Rough Trade.”
Le Gun have created 3 phantasmagorical vistas of the iconic shops Rough Trade West and East populated by many of the famous patrons who have walked the shops floors over the years. Joe Strummer and Patti Smith rub shoulders with the Ramones and Genesis P Orridge in scenes which celebrate the independent spirit of Rough Trade.
Artists from Le Gun are also paying homage to the rich history of Rough Trade by creating a series of apocryphal album covers. Le Gun blur the lines between fiction and reality by importing a selection of records from the parallel universe of LeGundon.
The show follows Le Gun’s successful exhibitions in Paris last year at the legendary Shakespeare and Company bookshop and at the Cafe de Flore. In June Le Gun will take part in the show Utopia 2016 at Somerset House, London.
