MALAGASY & GILSON At Newport-Paris (Archive Quality Ethnic Jazz 1973 French-only private press 9-track vinyl LP on Jef Gilson’s own Palm label, recorded in a St-Germain-des-Prés nightclub with musicians from Antananarivo. In the late sixties, Jef’s musical explorations led him to the ex-French colony of Madagascar, the island just off the south eastern coast of Africa. Re-released by Jazzman Records in recent years, the album documents an incredible ethno-jazz sound as & when it was released, with instruments including the valiha [a Madagascan harp on bambo], the ondioline and exotic percussion mixed with modal jazz! Recently acquired from a private dealer in Paris, here we have a stunning archive copy from the vaults, complete with original four-page ‘Palm Journal’ press release in French. The front laminated picture sleeve is Near Mint with merely the lightest evidence of natural age wear and the vinyl remains in near ‘as new’ condition – Recommended! PALM5)
TUBBY HAYES QUINTET …After Lights Out (Impossibly rare 1957 UK 6-track mono vinyl LP, on the highly collectable Tempo label, recorded in London on 17th July 1956 with Dickie Hawdon, Harry South, Pete Elderfield and Bill Eyden – a crucial piece of British jazz history, issued in the fully laminated flipback picture sleeve TAP6. Please see ‘more info’ for condition details…).
TONTON MACOUTE Tonton Macoute (Rare & In-Demand Original 1971 UK Neon label 7-track vinyl LP featuring a slice of British jazz-rock with touches of blues and psych, revered by the prog intelligentsia. The superb Keef-designed matt gatefold picture sleeve was printed & made by the EJ Day Group and displays some scuffing to its edges, yet the spine is clearly legible and the inside print immaculate with just a small pen mark next to one of the tracks. The vinyl sits inside its die-cut poly-lined inner and remains excellent with only a few light cosmetic surface scuffs but shows only light evidence of play – Recommended! NE4).
