What is an audiophile pressing?
Well, in a nut shell, it’s an audio format pressed to help enhance the sound quality, be that on vinyl or Compact Disc.
The idea being the heavier the vinyl pressing, the better. There have been pressings released from 120 up to 200 Gram in weight, usually the 200 Gram will play at 45rpm providing a better audio experience, instead of the standard 33 1/3rpm.
Compact Discs have various different formats, gold was used in the earlier pressing as it supposedly provided a better a clearer sound reproduction.
Mobile Fidelity are known for being one of the leaders in producing vinyl and CDs of an audiophile grade, with the original releases now highly collectable.
We now have Super Audio CDs, SHM-CD providing a high-fidelity-audio, Blu-Spec CDs using Blu-ray technology, along with DVD-Audio using DVD technology, both providing surround sound audio.

HEAVEN 17 Another Big Idea (1996-2008) (2020 UK limited edition 42-track remastered 4-LP box set comprising three studio albums and a concert album – all pressed on MULTI-COLOURED 180 gram VINYL. Comprises the studio albums ‘Bigger Than America’ pressed on BLUE VINYL, ‘Before After’ on GREEN VINYL and ‘Naked As Advertised’ [Versions ’08] on WHITE VINYL plus the the live recording ‘How Live Is’ on BLUE VINYL. Each disc is issued in a picture sleeve and all housed in a picture slipcase – still sealed in its hype stickered shrinkwrap DEMRECBOX46).
MARVIN GAYE Collected (2017 UK limited edition Music On Vinyl Collected Series 28-track 2-LP compilation pressed on 180 Gram Vinyl. Includes All I Need To Get By, What’s Going On, I Want You, I Heard ItThrough The Grapevine, It Takes Two [with Kim Weston] and Ain’t No Mountain High Enough [with Tammi Terrell]; housed in a gatefold picture sleeve with 4-page booklet. The sleeve displays minimal wear and the vinyl looks barely played, remains in a ‘near as new’ condition MOVLP1818).
KEANE Night Train (2020 UK Record Store Day exclusive limited edition 11-track LP pressed on 180 GRAM TRANSPARENT ORANGE VINYL. Originally released in 2010 and available on vinyl for the first time, this issue includes two bonus tracks – Stop For A Minute [Work in Progress] and See You Again [Demo featuring K’naan]. Housed in a picture sleeve with digital download card).
ETTA JAMES Tell Mama (2014 German issue of the brilliant 1968 12-track stereo LP pressed on Audiophile quality 180 Gram Heavyweight Vinyl, one of the classic Cadet albums of the era, recorded at Muscle Shoals. The picture sleeve replicates the original album’s artwork. Although not sealed, this example remains in a ‘near as new’ condition).
