For anyone who collects vinyl, we know that some of the most highly wanted pressings tend to be those classed as Audiophile.
Those with the best hi-fi equipment will always want the best quality sounding pressing available, be that high quality 180 gram or heavier vinyl, CD’s, Super Audio CD’s, SHM-CD’s, DVD-Audio Discs and more, from companies like DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Nautilus, Nexus, Simply Vinyl or Nimbus.
AUDIOPHILE VINYL
‘True Fidelity’ vinyl is perhaps the ultimate format for the audiophile. Issues are taken from original master tapes for pure ‘as intended sound’, and production techniques such as half-speed mastering, quadraphonic sound and special formulated virgin vinyl are common in most audiophile releases.
There are many labels who issue audiophile recordings, but only a few specialize in it. Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab (MFSL) have a variety of series including ‘Original Master Recordings’
[OMR] and ‘Ultra High-Quality Recordings’ [UHQR]. Other important audiophile labels include Nautilus, Direct-Disk Labs, Sheffield Lab and Wilson Audio.
AUDIOPHILE COMPACT DISCS
With the development of the compact disc so typically came the development of its audiophile counterpart. Again, there are specialist labels, there are varying techniques (gold discs, layered discs, high-density discs) and there are varying opinions on the listening pleasure! YES Fragile (2006 US exclusive limited edition 9-track LP pressed on 180gram VIRGIN VINYL. Propelled by the timeless hit ‘Roundabout’, Yes’ fourth album [originally released in 1971] became an instant classic and is undoubtedly one of prog-rock’s finest moments. It was the first Yes record to feature Rick Wakeman on keyboards and the first to display the inimitable artwork of Roger Dean, superbly remastered at AcousTech by Kevin Gray & Steve Hoffman, complete with a replica eight page full colour booklet in superb high quality pasted gatefold sleeve reproducing the original album artwork. Both sleeve & vinyl are in fantastic near ‘as new’ condition, still in the stickered open shrink! AAPP7211).
LOVE Forever Changes (Limited Edition 2012 US 45th Anniversary issue of the 1967 11-track stereo LP, a Black Friday Record Store Day exclusive pressed on Premium RTI HQ-180gram Vinyl & cut from the original analog master by Chris Bellman at Bernie Grundman Mastering. This album is widely considered one of the Top Ten must-have Psych records from the sixties. Comes housed in a replica deluxe sleeve with bonus US replica vinyl 7″ of the first single, Alone Again Or [2:49 Edit backed with A House Is Not A Motel]. Still in the custom stickered open bag, the heavyweight vinyl shows little signs of play RSD1-74013).
ALICE COOPER Trash (2019 UK/EU limited edition ‘Music On Vinyl’ 10-track LP pressed on Audiophile quality 180 Gram Heavyweight Silver & Black Marbled Vinyl. Originally released in 1989, with guest appearances from Jon Bon Jovi, Stiv Bators, Steven Tyler & Kane Roberts [who left Cooper’s band in ’88] and songwriting contributions from Joan Jett, Diane Warren, Jon Bon Jovi & Richie Sambora. Housed in an individually numbered picture sleeve with lyric insert, which remains sealed within its custom-stickered resealable bag MOVLP1862)
