Form their humble beginnings in Athens, Georgia, to becoming a beloved phenomenon that touched the lives of fans around the world, R.E.M are an important band in the history of rock music. Their ever-evolving sound outlasted ‘80s metal, ‘90s alt-rock, the rise and fall of Brit Pop, and just about every stylistic shift that contemporary music went though.
We recently picked up a superb collection of R.E.M rarities, collectors items, and unique memorabilia that is still being added to our site. Below are just handful of some of the wonderful highlights, and with more still to come, keep an eye on the latest arrivals over at eil.com
REM Radio Free Europe (Very Rare 1981 US second press 7″ vinyl single with the Hib-Tone address printed at the bottom of the purple wide centred labels, also including the fan favourite b-side, Sitting Still. This is the original recording of Radio Free Europe, before the band re-recorded it for their debut album, Murmur. The fragile paper picture sleeve has seen some creasing and discoloration with age, while the vinyl shows some minor paper scuffs and one or two hairlines. After close inspection, a clean, and a play test of the record these are inaudible and nothing more than cosmetic marks that do not affect play. There is some unobtrusive surface noise in quiter passages of the tracks, but it does not draw any attention away from the music. Overall this is a superb condition copy, and a chance to own a peice of R.E.M history at an advantageous price HT0001).
REM Good King Wenceslas + Christmas Card (Rare original 1989 US 2-track limited edition Christmas fan-club only wide-centered vinyl 7″ single which also includes Academy Fight Song and is housed inside a unique lightly textured fold-out picture sleeve which opens out into afantastic 21″ x 15″ poster featuring a great close-up live black and white photo of the band. It also comes with a fold out christmas card in its own postmarked envelope. The sleeve shows very minimal corner creasing from storage over the years, but the vinyl itself is in spectacular, near ‘as new’ condition. Hard to find now in any condition, and the first one we have seen with the christmas card in 20 years).
REM Parade Of The Wooden Soldiers (Rare Limited Edition 1988 US fan club-only wide centred 7″ single pressed on Green Vinyl, also featuring See No Evil, unique custom picture sleeve. The sleeve shows minimal wear, with a sticker mark to the top right hand corner and very light creasing, however the vinyl appears unplayed and in near ‘as new’ condition. Incredibly hard to find now, and a superb R.E.M collectors item U-23518M)
REM Talk About The Passion (1983 UK solid centre ‘A’ label promotional vinyl 7″ playing the same 3.22 stereo version on both sides, plain company die cut paper sleeve. This track was never commercially released on a vinyl 7″. The vinyl does showa one or two inaudible paper scuffs from being taken in and out of the sleeve, but remains in superb condition PFP1026).
