Audiophile collectables at eil.com this week, includes Jefferson Airplane, Poco, Moody Blues & more

For anyone who collects vinyl, we know that some of the most highly wanted pressings tend to be those classed as Audiophile.
Those with the best hi-fi equipment will always want the best quality sounding pressing available, be that high quality 180 gram or heavier vinyl, CD’s, Super Audio CD’s, SHM-CD’s, DVD-Audio Discs and more, from companies like DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Nautilus, Nexus, Simply Vinyl or Nimbus.
AUDIOPHILE VINYL
‘True Fidelity’ vinyl is perhaps the ultimate format for the audiophile. Issues are taken from original master tapes for pure ‘as intended sound’, and production techniques such as half-speed mastering, quadraphonic sound and special formulated virgin vinyl are common in most audiophile releases.
There are many labels who issue audiophile recordings, but only a few specialize in it. Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab (MFSL) have a variety of series including ‘Original Master Recordings’
[OMR] and ‘Ultra High-Quality Recordings’ [UHQR]. Other important audiophile labels include Nautilus, Direct-Disk Labs, Sheffield Lab and Wilson Audio.
AUDIOPHILE COMPACT DISCS
With the development of the compact disc so typically came the development of its audiophile counterpart. Again, there are specialist labels, there are varying techniques (gold discs, layered discs, high-density discs) and there are varying opinions on the listening pleasure! But we’re here to bring all those quandaries together.

Here at eil.com we have a nice range of Audiophile pressings to suit everyone’s taste and pockets.

POCO Legend (Limited edition 1979 US Mobile Fidelity issue of the 1978 9-track LP, half-speed mastered in Japan for the States & pressed on Super High Definition Vinyl, housed in a deluxe picture sleeve with wraparound company card inner. The sleeve shows minimal edge wear and is a little ‘off-white’ in place, the vinyl is near ‘as new’ MFSL1-020).

IDRIS MUHAMMAD House Of The Rising Sun (2016 Japanese exclusive limited edition 6-track Blu-Spec CD [an audio Compact Disc format using Blu-Ray technology and playable on all CD players], originally released in 1976, a tough slab of fantastic soul-jazz with Hugh McCracken, Bob Berg, Fred Wesley, Patti Austin and many others; picture sleeve with Japanese text inside and with the ‘CTI supreme Collection 2’ obi-strip KICJ2523).

SIR GEORG SOLTI conducting THE CHICAGO SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA & CHORUS Symphony No. 9 (TAS listed 1972 UK stereo double LP box set on the boxed narrow band label, recorded in May 1972 in the Krannert Centre of the University of Illinois as an exclusive Decca Silver Jubilee Recording. Also stars Pilar Lorengar [Soprano], Yvonne Minton [Mezzo-Soprano], Stuart Burrows [Tenor] & Martti Talvela [Bass], complete with fold out libretto insert & a front laminated 12″ picture box. The box showsjust a little paper wear around the edges & the vinyl discs still appear barely played 6BB121/2).

BOB DYLAN The Bootleg Series No. 10 – Another Self Portrait: 1969-1971 (2013 Japanese 35-track Double Blu-Spec CD [an audio Compact Disc format using Blu-Ray technology and playable on all CD players]. Features rarities and previous unreleased recordings from the historic 1969 – 1971 period; in a thin double case with picture sleeve & back inlay, seperate English & Japanese booklets, within a card picture slipcase and full back wrap-around obi-strip SICP-30335/6).

TUBBY HAYES QUINTET …. After Lights Out (2011 Japanese issue of the extremely rare 1956 6-track mono LP, pressed on 180gm Audiophile Vinyl & also featuring Dickie Hawdon (trumpet), Harry South (piano), Pete Elderfield (bass) & Bill Eyden (drums). With originals now regularly fetching four figures on the collector’s market, this Japanese issue is a welcome return of a much missed album. Complete with Japanese insert, the fully laminated flipback sleeve & labels reproduce the originalissue exactly without a barcode on the sleeve to spoil the period feel. The only difference is that this copy is as new & pristine. According to the original liner notes, meticulously restored in this faithful reissue, half of the tracks were recorded with the lights in the studio turned off. The deep relaxation and concentration brought by the dark environment on July 17th 1956 undoubtedly enhanced the performance. This is a great record and true collector’s item – A must have for fans of Tubby Hayes! TAP6).

MOODY BLUES Days Of Future Passed (1981 US limited edition Mobile Fidelity half-speed mastered audiophile issue of the 1967 7-track LP, pressed on Super High Definition Vinyl by the Victor Company in Japan, picture sleeve with fold-out MFSL catalogue inner.
