One of the co-writers and original singer of I Love Rock ‘N’ Roll, Alan Merrill, has passed away after contracting coronavirus.
The news was shared online by his daughter, Laura, who said that Merrill, 69, had been healthy enough to play shows in recent weeks and played down a ‘cold’ that he thought he had.
“You don’t think It’ll happen to you or your strong family. It has,” she wrote. “Stay home if not for you, for others. For my dad. This thing is real.”
I Love Rock ‘N’ Roll was written by Merrill alongside Jake Hooker of The Arrows in 1975. It was made famous in 1982 by Joan Jett, and has seen subsequent cover versions from artists such as Britney Spears and Weird Al Yankovic. It was also parodied for the charity single, I Love Sausage Rolls, which was Christmas number one last year.
