Gentle Giant to reissue first four albums on vinyl

From Loudersound.

Gentle Giant are to rerelease their first four albums – Gentle Giant, Acquiring Taste, Three Friends and Octopus – on vinyl in April. These will be pressed on 180 gram vinyl and feature their original gatefold sleeves and artwork.

In a statement, the band say, “Gentle Giant are happy to announce the release of the first four albums on vinyl on April 3. After the positive response to the box set Unburied Treasure many fans asked whether the vinyl albums would ever be available. The band has responded and decided to make these albums officially available for the first time in decades.”

Gentle Giant’s self-tiled debut was produced by Tony Visconti and released in October 1970. Visconti also produced the follow-up, Acquiring The Taste, the following year.

Three Friends – produced by the band – was released in 1972, and was followed the same year by the classic Octopus.

Unburied Treasure came out in December. Spread across 30-discs, it featured all 11 of the band’s studio albums, along with 15 live concerts – seven of which had never previously been released.

Limited to just 2000 copies, the set also featured a 136-page coffee table hardback book, a 96-page tour history book, and signed photographs of band members Derek Shulman, Ray Shulman, Gary Green, Kerry Minnear and John Weathers.

Last year, Gentle Giant vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Derek Shulman hinted that there might be further releases to come, telling Prog, “I’ve found things that I’d completely forgotten about, including a couple of live tapes that are not part of this box. They sound very well recorded, so we’re going to put them out next year.

“One is going to be called The Missing Tape. Owning something that you can handle and see is a good thing, rather than something that is just peripheral. I think fans want to hold something that’s not just ones and zeros.”

GENTLE GIANT Acquiring The Taste (1971 first UK issue 8-track vinyl LP on the Vertigo 'swirl' label. This album took the band into more experimental & darker areas but is still their own recognisable sound - a rich blend of hard rock & orchestration - with hints of influences from King Crimson & Van Der Graaf Generator, housed in a gatefold picture sleeve with the poly lined 'swirl' die-cut inner. The sleeve displays some minor general wear with some edge & corner scuffing, and hassome strange blank ink marks on the back, but still pretty damn good considering it was never laminated. The labels have a few light spindle marks and light signs of age, whilst the vinyl has only a few light signs of play. Overall a Very Good example, making an ideal play copy)

  • Gentle Giant - In A Glass House - White Label Test Pressing - UK - vinyl LP - £125.00, $151.25, €140.00 (Back In Stock) (arrived 26-Jan-2023 16:00)

GENTLE GIANT In A Glass House (Rare 1973 UK white label test pressing for the 6-track LP. With plain labels, housed in a title-stamped plain die-cut paper sleeve. The vinyl shows minimal wear, with a nice clear sheen. A great collectable for arguably Gentle Giant's finest record WWA002)

  • Gentle Giant - In A Glass House - EX - UK - vinyl LP - £125.00, $151.25, €140.00 (New Item) (arrived 26-Jan-2023 15:40)

GENTLE GIANT In A Glass House (1973 UK first press 6-track LP on the black & silver WWA label [this album did not come out on the Vertigo swirl label in the UK], for many their finest record. Comes housed in a striking die-cut textured sleeve complete with PVC window, art print card insert. Because the textured sleeves were never laminated they were prone to storage wear with age, however this one has suffered only minor shelfwear and is overall in fantastic condition for its styleandage. The vinyl too is nice & clean & shows only minor cosmetic evidence of light play, a great copy of this Prog rock gem! WWA002)

  • Gentle Giant - Gentle Giant - 2nd - EX - UK - vinyl LP - £75.00, $90.75, €84.00 (New Item) (arrived 26-Jan-2023 15:36)

GENTLE GIANT Gentle Giant (Mid 70s UK second issue of the debut 1970 7-track LP on the 'spaceship' Vertigo label, the innovative first album from the Shulman brothers & co, including the big-riff laden opener, Giant, & staple, longterm live set regulars, Funny Ways & Isn't It Quiet And Cold, featuring the late, first drummer Martin Smith, housed in the brilliant 'Giant with band in hands' gatefold picture sleeve. The sleeve shows just a little light general wear with light scuffingto the spine, whilst the vinyl has light scuffs on side one, which have no real impact on play)

  • Gentle Giant - Free Hand - 1st + Insert - EX - UK - vinyl LP - £35.00, $42.35, €39.20 (New Item) (arrived 26-Jan-2023 15:33)

GENTLE GIANT Free Hand (1975 UK green Chrysalis label 7-track vinyl LP, the highest charting album in the US from the UK prog rockers and is regarded by many as the band's peak, picture sleeve. The sleeve has a little shelfwear to the edges and comes complete with the illustrated lyric card insert, whilst the vinyl remains in excellent condition with little sign of play CHR1093)
