A record of extreme magnificence… the original 1966 UK 7-track MONO vinyl LP on the blue & black Columbia label in the Lansdowne Series, starring Ian Carr [Trumpet, Flugelhorn], Don Rendell [Tenor Saxophone, Soprano Saxophone, Flute, Clarinet], Michael Garrick [Piano], Dave Green [Bass] & Trevor Tomkins [Drums]. This was arguably the greatest British-Jazz album ever made, & the closest we got to replicating the magic of Miles Davis-John Coltrane-Bill Evans on Kind Of Blue. Bold statement indeed, but have you heard this?
What you get is the very best, most stylistic & individual sounding players in British Jazz coming together for a kind of “supergroup”. And it works. The compositions are outstanding, there is inspiration drawn from the pioneering modal jazz coming from the States as well as a touch of Eastern exotica. The interplay between the individual members of the group was telepathic & rewards the listener with repeat enjoyment.
