This week, Dick has taken on a recently unearthed gem that he had never heard of until recently; Walter Wegmuller’s expansive krautrock opus, Tarot.
Walter Wegmuller is a little known Swiss painter, but it was his brief foray into music that most people – mainly die hard krautrock collectors – know his name. Teaming up with a ‘supergroup’ of musicians, known only as the Cosmic Jokers, who at times featured Manuel Göttsching and Klaus Schulze of Ash Ra Tempel, Jurgen Dollase and Harald Grosskopf of Wallenstein, and Dieter Dierks. The result was an album called Tarot, which is a complex concept album about, you guessed it, Tarot.
Spanning 85 minutes, Wegmuller narrates the album almost entirely in German, telling the story of each card within a deck of tarot cards. It is somewhat hard to get a handle on if you German is not your native tongue, but more often than note, Wegmuller’s dulcet tones provide another layer to the sonic pallet of spaced out bliss that is the album.
Aside from the music itself, the packaging is what makes this one of a kind piece even more mouthwatering. It is pressed across two LP’s, with a glorious hard top box to keep it protected. It comes with a booklet that explains the story of the album in English, and of course, what would this album be without a set of tarot cards to go with it.
