Top British vinyl rarity ‘First Utterance’ the 1971 UK LP from the short-lived Comus is just in at eil.com. Released on the tiny Dawn imprint at the (excuse the pun) dawn of the ’70s, this challenging, other-worldy and downright freaky long player is a record that, unlike some other ‘long lost classics’, doth live up to the hype. Although the band played regularly with David Bowie at the Beckenham Arts Lab events, the album itself sold in very small quantities and promptly sunk without trace. Recent years have seen the record labelled retrospectively as ‘Wyrd Folk’, that unique blend of British folk mixed with rock, magick, alchemy and the avant-garde – like the Wicker Man but on stronger drugs. Issued in a downright scary gatefold picture sleeve with captivating artwork from the band’s very own Roger Wooten, it also includes the always-hard-to-find lyric insert too.
