It seems in recent years you can’t move for 180g this and 200g vinyl that as every label (and his dog) release/reissue ‘deluxe’ editions of classic albums. If you’ve bought some of these and have been just a tad disappointed sound-wise then fear not, as we’ve just acquired an incredible collection of genuine audiophile quality vinyl and CDs from top US reissue label Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs.
Mobile Fidelity were one of the first labels to concentrate on issuing vinyl on new or ‘virgin vinyl’. Although standard practice throughout the ’60s the oil crisis and economic downturn in the ’70s meant that cheaper alternative were used, resulting in poor audio reproduction, flimsy vinyl, pops and crackles – sadly, an all too common fault with records manufactured during this period.
Seeking to redress this, Mobile Fidelity took reissuing vinyl to another level (and then some), often securing the original masters, mastering their records using ‘half-speed’ technology, meaning that the vinyl is pressed from disc lacquers cut at 1/2 normal playing speed allowing for (warning it gets technical here) “extended frequency response and better transient attack”, in other words it sounds fantastic, revealing subtle nuances and much greater clarity to many classic recordings. That’s not to mention pressing single LPs as double ’45 RPM editions with wonderfully chunky, thick-card sleeves with rice-paper inners – NICE!
If you’re a CD lover, there’s a huge range of Super Audio titles (SACD) too, from Miles Davis, Frank Sinatra and Patricia Barber to Bob Dylan, Allman Brothers, Love, Dire Straits, Jefferson Airplane and loads more. These titles were released in numbered limited editions and tend to sell out very quickly (such is Mobile Fidelity’s reputation), so be quick, they won’t be around be around for long!
