Q-Tip to teach course on jazz’s influence on hip-hop

A Tribe Called Quest rapper, Q-Tip, will co-teach a class at New York University that looks at the influence of jazz on hip-hop.

The seven-class course will start later this year at NYU. Q-Tip, along with music historian Ashley Kahn, will teach students “about the intersections and parallel developments of these musical styles,” NYU said of the course.

“I couldn’t be more excited to share with the students what I know and I look forward to them also teaching me. Teaching is an exchange of sharing and receiving for all involved,” Q-Tip said in a statement, who is synonymous with the fusion of jazz and hip-hop, which gave A Tribe Called Quest their signature sound.
