To give you, our customers, the chance to get to know the team behind eil.com, we like to let show you what we are about and what we have been listening to lately. This week is one of our buyers, Glen Bushell.
What are your top five albums of all time?
If I was going to be really honest, I would have to narrow it down to five albums from various genres of music, because my taste is that broad. However, to save time, I’ll go with the following which is often my ‘go to’ answer.
- Nirvana – In Utero
- The Smiths – Meat Is Murder
- Misfits – Walk Among Us
- My Bloody Valentine – Loveless
- Hum – You’d Prefer an Astronaut
No matter how embarrassing, what was the first piece of music you bought?
Pretty sure it was a cassette copy of 2 Unlimited’s certified banger, No Limits.
What have you been listening to this week?
Merauder – Master Killer
Boris – Pink
Cloakroom – Time Well
Knocked Loose – Laugh Tracks
Incendiary – Thousand Mile Stare
Heretoir – The Circle
What album would you recommend customers check out if they haven’t heard it before?
Purely because it is one of the best albums released this year, I’m going to have to say Forever by Code Orange. It is earth-shatteringly heavy, with some of the most monolithic breakdowns I’ve ever heard, yet it has so much more than that. It shows how versatile Code Orange can be when they add disjointed melody and caustic bursts of industrial electronics into the mix. Forever is one of the most original sounding records to come out of the hardcore scene in years, and deserves every bit of hype that is surrounding it right now.
What are the top five gigs you have attended?
Much like the album list, this is going to be tough, but after thinking long and hard, I’ve settled on the following:
- Glassjaw – The Barfly, London 2007
- Danzig – The Roundhouse, London 2013
- The Cure – O2 Arena, Prague 2008
- Morrissey – London Palladium, 2006
- My Bloody Valentine – The Roundhouse, 2008
If you could take home one item we have in stock today, what would it be and why?
I don’t even have to think about. It would be the yellow vinyl pressing of Horror Business by The Misfits. I can’t help but feel my collection is empty without it, and perhaps one day I will save the money for it – or max out my credit card.
Finally, does music really sound better on vinyl?
It depends on what you want out of music, and how precious you are about sound quality. I think some records sound great on vinyl, particularly Loveless By My Bloody Valentine, or Down Colourful Hill by Red House Painters; they just feel made for vinyl. However, to get the best out of your record collection, you need good equipment, otherwise it will sound pretty similar to consuming music any other way.
