Ed Sheeran finds himself alongside classics from Amy Winehouse, David Bowie and more.
Vinyl is still the format everybody’s talking about, with a new generation of fans falling in love with the vintage black plastic. But leading the way as the most popular vinyl album of the year so far is a very up-to-date release.
Ed Sheeran’s third record ÷, already the biggest artist album of the year so far, has sold 31,000 copies on vinyl since its release in March.
A reissue of The Beatles’ classic Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band album only came out three weeks ago, but it’s already the second most popular vinyl title, with the soundtrack to the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie – Awesome Mix 1 – one place behind.
Rag’n’Bone Man has found an audience on vinyl too, as his debut Human takes fourth place, while six years after her death, Amy Winehouses’s popularity shows no sign of waning – her second album Back to Black rounds off the Top 5.
David Bowie claims five titles in the Top 40, the highest, Legacy, coming in seventh on the half-year rundown, and while there is a number of classic releases from artists like Fleetwood Mac, Nirvana and Oasis, 2017 is represented too.
The xx’s I See You (15), Humanz from Gorillaz (16), Royal Blood’s How Did We Get So Dark (20) and Harry Styles’s self-titled debut (36) are just a few of this year’s new music releases making the Vinyl Top 40.
Over on the vinyl singles, David Bowie dominates the Top 10, with No Plan leading the way at this halfway stage of the year, followed by Sound and Vision (5) and Be My Wife (6). Another classic act, The Smiths, score two slots with The Queen Is Dead (2) and The Boy with the Thorn in his Side (4). The former Smiths release was recently reissued for its 31st birthday and landed at Number 1 on the Official Vinyl Singles Chart.
It’s not just reissues making an impact; there are plenty of fresh tracks from 2017 finding fans on vinyl. Arcade Fire’s Everything Now (9) is the most popular new song released on vinyl, with Kasabian (10), War on Drugs (15), The The (17) and Blondie (20) all breaking the Top 20.
