The rivalry between their two bands may have started Britpoplegend, but Blur frontman Damon Albarn and Oasis songwriterNoel Gallagher put their differences aside last night, to celebrate the birthday of Paul Simonon, bassist of The Clash.

Simonon, who turns 60 on Tuesday, was joined onstage by Gallagher, Albarn and The Pretenders’ Chrissie Hynde at a private party in a London Club. The temporary supergroup worked through a brief set of songs by Albarn’s band Gorillaz and The Clash, after opening with a rendition of the 1974 Dr Feelgood hit Roxette.

The band also played Kingdom of Doom, first recorded by Albarn and Simonon with their supergroup The Good, The Bad and The Queen in 2006. Grime MC Kano rapped on the final song of the night, a version of Gorillaz’s debut single, Clint Eastwood.

This is not the first time Gallagher and Albarn have performed together. In 2013, both musicians took the stage with Paul Weller to perform Blur’s 1999 single Tender, at a Teenage Cancer Trust benefit concert in the Royal Albert Hall.

There may be further performances on the cards. Speaking to the NME last year, Albarn said: “I still see Noel from time to time. We text a bit… I can imagine [a collaboration] being a very distinct possibility at some point in the future.”

“As yet we haven’t really talked about it,” he said, before adding, “okay,  we have a little bit. We’re talking. It’s not anything to get excited about yet… but the principle of us making music together is something… you know, it would be fair to say, we have discussed it at least once.”

However, Gallagher dismissed Albarn’s remarks in May, saying: “The thing with Damon was a flippant comment as casually thrown around as ‘We should go for a drink.’”
