The album is one of only five copies of the ‘New York’ version of his classic Blood on the Tracks album
Got a spare $12,000 (£7,700) lying around? And are you a bit of a Bob Dylan fan? Then get yourself off to California, where the Los Angeles branch of Amoeba Records is selling off one of what is believed to be only five copies of one of his very rarest records.
While Dylan’s 1975 album Blood on the Tracks is acknowledged as one of his classics, and reached No 1 in the US and No 4 in the UK, the album that emerged was not the one Dylan originally planned.
Dylan first recorded Blood on the Tracks in autumn 1974 in New York, and test pressings were made in November. However, his brother convinced him the album was too dreary, so Dylan went to a studio on Minneapolis to rerecord five of the tracks in December. The final version of the album, featuring the Minneapolis recordings, was released on January 1974.
What Amoeba is selling, however, is one of the test pressings of the “New York” version of the album.
The New York recordings have been widely heard – in common with much unreleased Dylan material they have been widely bootlegged, and tracks have also appeared on on the official Dylan releases Biograph and The Bootleg Series Vols 1-3. However, the original test pressings are incredibly rare.
Amoeba’s copy came from the shop’s recent purchase of a record collection of a 4,000-strong collection of LPs from “an iconic industry family” in New Jersey. The record is the most expensive record Amoeba has ever put up for sale.
