The Black Sabbath singer collected awards among pop stars Ariana Grande, Nicki Minaj and Justin Bieber
Emerging pop star Ariana Grande and rapper Nicki Minaj were overshadowed at Sunday’s MTV European Music Awards by 65-year-old rocker Ozzy Osbourne, who picked up the Global Icon award.
Guns N’Roses guitarist Slash and Biffy Clyro’s Simon Neil teamed up for a fiery rendition of Osbourne’s 1980 hit Crazy Train at Glasgow’s SSE Hydro in his honour. The two-hour award ceremony, which was hosted by Minaj, also included a montage of Osbourne’s “best bits”, including clips from his family’s hit reality show, The Osbournes, which aired between 2002 and 2005.
Slash told the audience: “For four decades the Prince of Darkness has rocked anyone who dared to listen.
“This is a guy who does not know how to do ordinary. He scares the hell out of most people and all bats. But to me is a gentle man and a gentleman.”
Collecting the Global Icon award, Osbourne said: “I don’t know where they got this icon s— from but it’s good to be here tonight. God bless you all, thank you for coming.”
