Audiophile collectables at eil.com this week, includes Queen, T-Rex, Pretenders & more

For anyone who collects vinyl, we know that some of the most highly wanted pressings tend to be those classed as Audiophile.
Those with the best hi-fi equipment will always want the best quality sounding pressing available, be that high quality 180 gram or heavier vinyl, CD’s, Super Audio CD’s, SHM-CD’s, DVD-Audio Discs and more, from companies like DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Nautilus, Nexus, Simply Vinyl or Nimbus.
AUDIOPHILE VINYL
‘True Fidelity’ vinyl is perhaps the ultimate format for the audiophile. Issues are taken from original master tapes for pure ‘as intended sound’, and production techniques such as half-speed mastering, quadraphonic sound and special formulated virgin vinyl are common in most audiophile releases.
There are many labels who issue audiophile recordings, but only a few specialize in it. Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab (MFSL) have a variety of series including ‘Original Master Recordings’
[OMR] and ‘Ultra High-Quality Recordings’ [UHQR]. Other important audiophile labels include Nautilus, Direct-Disk Labs, Sheffield Lab and Wilson Audio.
AUDIOPHILE COMPACT DISCS
With the development of the compact disc so typically came the development of its audiophile counterpart. Again, there are specialist labels, there are varying techniques (gold discs, layered discs, high-density discs) and there are varying opinions on the listening pleasure! But we’re here to bring all those quandaries together.

HARRY NILSSON Son Of Schmilsson (2021 limited edition Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab 11-track 2-LP, mastered by Krieg Wunderlich at MFSL on the Gain 2 Ultra Analog System, specially plated and pressed on 180g High-Definition Vinyl at 45RPM.Heavyweight gatefold picture sleeve with original album art, individually numbered in gold on the back and sealed inside its perforated loose bag. Invited guests participating in the fun include George Harrison, Ringo Starr, Lowell George, Nicky Hopkins, Peter Frampton, and Bobby Keys joining session pros such as Klaus Voorman, Ray Cooper, and Milt Holland. Recommended).

THE PRETENDERS Pretenders (2014 US Mobile Fidelity 12-track Ultradisc UHR Gain 2 Hybrid SACD [Super Audio CD – playable on all CD and SACD players], the debut album originally released in 1980, including Brass In Pocket and Stop Your Sobbing; individually numbered ‘Original Master Recording’ internal pasted mini-LP replica card gatefold picture sleeve with ‘MoFi’ card insert. This example is still in the stickered open shrink, therefore remains in a ‘near as new’ condition).

BLACK SABBATH The End: Birmingham (2017 UK limited edition 3-LP set pressed on 180 Gram Vinyl, recorded live on the 4th February 2017. After nearly fifty years it was the final show of Black Sabbath’s Farewell Tour back where it all began in their home city of Birmingham, the industrial heart of England. There could be no more appropriate place for the Godfathers of Heavy Metal to take their last bow. Geezer Butler, Tony Iommi and Ozzy Osbourne delivered a set that focused on Black Sabbath’s classic seventies albums, the albums that defined a genre and inspired future generations. It was an extraordinary, emotional night for both the band and the fans and one that will never be forgotten. Housed in a gatefold picture sleeve which remains factory sealed in the hype-stickered shrink).

QUEEN The Game (Rare and out of print 1994 US Mobile Fidelity limited edition ‘Ultradisc II’ audiophile 10-track 24 karat Gold CD, digitally remastered from the original master tapes. Including the classic singles Play The Game, Crazy Little Thing Called Love and Save Me. Housed in thespecial Mobile Fidelity jewel case with unique black & gold bordered booklet picture sleeve including the original artwork. This example includes the original card full-back wrap-around obi type insert, and amazingly remains factory sealed from new UDCD610).
