It took thirty years to secure the first robot, and now alongs comes a second…!
Sold to a longstanding client before it even reached our offices, this is truly only the second example of this legendary UK promotional-only large plastic robot as featured on the News Of The World album artwork that we have had. Those in the know within Queen circles will be well aware that only a handful are recorded as still in existence, including Brian May’s own example. Our first arrival is rather special since he was originally in the EMI offices.
Anyway, back to this fella. Also known as Frank – named after its designer Frank Kelly Freas. Measuring approximately 54 inches in height – nearly 140cm – this incredible rarity is made from silver coloured moulded plastic with hand-finished colouring and detail and it’s not well known, but each example is slightly different. The robot’s hands create a platform upon which the vinyl LPs can be displayed, held in place by a red wire-framed basket with antenna.
This example has a red QUEEN title sticker on its chest and it also has red eyes & mouth. This particular example was shipped to France for promotional duties in 1977 and then spent all of the 1980s as a display item in a nightclub/discotheque on the northern outskirts of Paris. For a 40 year old display it remains in excellent condition. A truly stunning centrepiece of any collection, Queen or otherwise.
