Broken Greek by Pete Paphides – just for the records: a pop superfan remembers

Pete Paphides, chief rock critic of The Times from 2005 to 2010, has written an epic childhood memoir. One of the producers of The Crown has already snapped up the TV rights, and it’s easy to see why. The story of Paphides’s childhood growing up in the 1970s in the Birmingham fish and chip shops of his immigrant parents — his Greek mother, Victoria, and Greek Cypriot father, Christakis — is tender, heartfelt, humane and very funny.

Paphides uses music in the same way that Nigel Slater used food in his autobiography Toast, vividly recreating his formative years through the songs of the era.
