Choice Cuts: Henry Manfredini – Friday The 13th Original Soundtrack

The slasher movie boom of the 1980’s produced many memorable characters and moments, and the Friday the 13th franchise would go on to be one of the most iconic and bestselling of all time all time. The original movie, which centred around Pamela Vorhees seeking revenge over the neglect of her son, Jason, was panned as much as it is adored. Regardless of your opinion of the film, Harry Manfredini’s nerve-shredding score remains one of the best of all time and helped set the mood perfectly.

In 2014 Waxwork Records announced they would be bringing the complete score to vinyl for the first time. They produced a number of variants, but it was the extremely limited ‘blood-filled’ variant that created the most buzz among the ever-growing community of soundtrack collectors. It was clear vinyl, filled with a red liquid that resembled blood and moved around the record as it was played or tilted. It may have been a gimmick, but it did look impressive.

It was originally believed that 100 copies were manufactured, but the owner of Waxwork Records, Kevin Dredge, has confirmed that the number was closer to 75, and some of those were damaged resulting in the label taking delivery of blood-soaked boxes. It has become quite the collector’s item over the past few years, with very few appearing for sale, but when they do they carry an average resale of around £500. Some have even reached the £1000 mark to die-hard collectors.

It wasn’t the first liquid-filled record and it likely won’t be the last, but the fake blood fits the theme of this iconic slasher move and score perfectly.
