This weeks jazz highlights include audiophile reissues from Donald Byrd and The Modern Jazz Quartet, and a Japanese import of Miles Davis’ 1973 live album, Black Beauty.

DONALD BYRD Royal Flush (Limited Edition 2013 US 6-track stereo double LP mastered from the original analog tape & pressed on 180gram Virgin Vinyl at RTI in Camarillo, CA as part of Music Matters’ ‘Blue Note The Definitive 45RPM Reissue’ series. Recorded by Rudy Van Gelder for Blue Note in 1961, Royal Flush is a lovely early Byrd session performed alongside Pepper Adams, Herbie Hancock, Butch Warren & Billy Higgins. Comes housed in the highest quality gatefold cover which is a heavyweight & deluxe design with a glossy finish & original session photography on the inside. The sleeve is Near Mint & the vinyl discs are Excellent with very little sign of play MMBST-84101).
MILES DAVIS Black Beauty – Miles Davis At Fillmore West (Mid to late 70s Japanese issue of the 1973 4-track double LP, recorded live on April 10th, 1970 at the Fillmore West in San Francisco and first released in Japan, also stars Steve Grossman, Chick Corea, Michael Henderson, Jack DeJohnette and Airto; gatefold picture sleeve withJapanese insert and top card obi-strip. This example remains in the hype stickered open shrink, therefore the sleeve displays minimal wear and the vinyl looks barely played 28AP2155~6).
THE MODERN JAZZ QUARTET At Music Inn Volume 2 (Limited Edition 1995 US Mobile Fidelity half-speed mastered audiophile issue of the 1958 6-track stereo LP guest starring Sonny Rollins, specially plated & pressed on 200gram High Definition Vinyl. Comes housed in a deluxe gatefold picture sleeve which is numbered on the back in gold & complete with company card inner. The sleeve & the vinyl appear Near Mint MFSL1-228).
