JOHN COLTRANE Soultrane (Amazing 1958 US first press 5-track deep groove mono vinyl LP, on the original Prestige ‘fireworks’ label with ‘Bergenfield’ address both sides & ‘RVG’ stamp in both run-outs. Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio in Hackensack, New Jersey, the album showcases Coltrane’s newfound ‘sheets of sound’ approach to magnificent effect, with Red Garland on Piano, Paul Chambers on Bass & Art Taylor on Drums, heavyweight pasted picture sleeve. KENNY DORHAM Una Mas (Wonderful 1963 US first press 3-track mono vinyl LP on the ‘New York’ address Blue Note label, with the ‘Van Gelder’ stamp & original Plastylite ‘ear’ etching in both run-outs. The legendary trumpeter leads this five starBlue Note date with Joe Henderson on Tenor, Herbie Hancock on Piano, Butch Warren on Bass & Tony Williams on Drums, & comes housed in the original pasted laminate picture sleeve with ‘West 61st’ date on the back & company catalogue inner. CHARLIE PARKER Charlie Parker On Verve 1946-1954 (Magnificent 1983 Japanese promotional sample 10-LP box set for review ahead of release, featuring all of the JATP jams from this period, all of the stunning “Bird & Strings” sides, his meetingswith Machito’s Cuban orchestra, the 1950 session with Dizzy Gillespie & Thelonious Monk, small-group dates (including a 1951 date with Miles Davis), odd encounters with voices & studio bands, the famous “Jam Blues” with fellow altoists JohnnyHodges & Benny Carter, plus his final recordings, a set of Cole Porter tunes. Comes housed in a deep 12″ picture box with 28-page ‘sessionography’ booklet & obi-strip. The packaging [VG+] has some light age wear with some scuffing to the edges & the vinyl discs are near ‘as new’ 00MJ3268/77).
