Here’s what the BBC and others have to say…

They’re a band in constant evolution, now the Monkeys sixth studio album Tranquility Base Hotel + Casino has seen them go in a wildly different direction once again.

Alex Turner and his Sheffield pals have ditched the shiny polished pop rock beats of last album, 2013’s AM, for a meandering piano driven sci fi jazz lounge record.

But enough of what we think, here’s some reviews:

It’s three stars from The NME, which says the High Green gang “shoot for the stars on their soon-to-be divisive sixth album.”

The Guardian gives it three stars, labelling it “funny, fresh and a little smug.”

Rolling Stone magazine in Alex’s adopted home America offer only two stars, describing it as “a Space-Lounge Odyssey” and “a weird lounge music detour.”

Aside from The Independent, the only other four stars we can find are on track six, Four Out of Five, which they performed for Jimmy Fallon last night.

As you can see below the Yorkshire band seem to have acquired a few extra members for their latest incarnation too…

Also Stateside, Pitchfork have gone through the “surreal” record track-by-track with its writer.

They weren’t the only ones though as Radio 1’s Annie Mac (above) caught up with Alex too in Rox Studios in LA, where the album was part-recorded and the 32-year-old told the DJ that his move from guitar to piano was down to the fact that he’d grown “suspicious” of the old six string.

“The guitar had lost its ability to give me any ideas” he said.

Within half an hour of their new album dropping, some wag had changed their Wikipedia description to “used to be an English rock band but now play weird piano music.”
