Staff Picks: All Time Top Vinyl & What I’m Listening To This Week 28/12/2017

To give you, our customers, the chance to get to know the team behind eil.com, we like to let show you what we are about and what we have been listening to lately. This week is a member of our buying team, Tim.

What are your top five albums of all time?

Cop out I know but I couldn’t possibly pick a top 5 all-time but I can pick some faves from the past year. So, in no particular order….

A Tribe Called Quest – We Got It From Here……Thank You 4 Your Service

What a treat, had no idea the album would be this good….

Laura Marling – Semper Femina – Lovely record…

Dego & Kaidi – A So We Gwarn

One-time 4-Hero-er Dego with co-hort Kaidi take in disco, boogie, house, afrobeat and more on Theo Parrish’s Sound Signature

…….I like a lot of ‘dance’ related stuff too which tends to be on 12”, these are recent-ish goodies…

Harvey Sutherland – Priestess/Bravado (Clarity)

Dan Shake – Shake Tapes Volume 3 (Shake)

Chez Damier – Edits, Reworks & Sounds (No label)

No matter how embarrassing, what was the first piece of music you brought?

Queen – Bicycle Race, £0.39p from WH Smiths!

What have you been listening to this week?

For the past couple of months just about every solo record by Ronnie Lane – it’s a close-run thing but ‘Anymore For Anymore’ has got its nose in front at the moment.

What album would you recommend customers check out if they haven’t heard it before?

Paddy McAloon ‘I Trawl The Megahertz’ – little known gem recorded when Prefab Sprout mainman was suffering from an eye condition resulting in a temporary loss of sight. Recorded with a classical ensemble, and featuring spoken word elements and bursts of shortwave radio, the 22 minute title track is a thing of beauty – The King of Rock ‘n’ Roll it most certainly ain’t!

What are the top five gigs you have attended

I saw lots of bands in the ‘80s, the Smiths in NY stands out for obvious reasons, Kraftwerk and Prince were other good ‘uns too….as for top 5….no idea!

If you could take home one item we have in stock today, what would it be and why?

Any of the Smiths proof artwork bits – N-I-C-E!

Your favourite personal piece?

God Save The Queen / Sex Pistols – sadly not the A&M pressing but just because it’s the greatest record (and sleeve) ever made…no?

Finally, does music really sound better on vinyl?

…I’m sure it does, not sure my ears can tell the difference any longer though.
