On This Day in 1976…

On this day in 1976, the Sex Pistols released their now iconic track, Anarchy In The UK.

The single was first issued in a plain black sleeve, and was the only Sex Pistols single to be released by EMI and reached 38 in the UK charts. The band were subsequently dropped in 1977 after dropping a number profanities on live television following the release of Anarchy In The UK.

The song gives a sensational and violent take on anarchism that vehemently captured the frustration, anger, and economic unrest in 1970s Britain. Malcolm Mclaren called the track “A call to arms to the kids who believe that rock and roll was taken away from them. It’s a statement of self rule, of ultimate independence.”

The track has been covered numerous times over the years, notably by Megadeth, Green Jelly, and Motley Crue.
