“Give us a Swirl”: Super Rare Vertigo Swirl Vinyl LPs at eil.com – Watch The Video

Just in at eil.com is this rather tasty selection of rare vinyl from legendary progressive-freak out label Vertigo.

Launched in 1969 as a subsidiary of Philips/Phonogram, Vertigo Records was the brainchild of Phonogram Records Creative Director Olav Wyper, the intention was to compete with the other major labels progressive imprints; EMI had Harvest, Decca/Deram and RCA spawned Neon…and compete they certainly did!

As you might expect early releases on the label from artists that went onto to achieve global fame (Black Sabbath, Status Quo, Rod Stewart) are very collectable indeed, however, it’s very often the artists that sunk without trace, released one album before promptly disappearing that are equally coveted.

Why so highly coveted? How about some of the most ground-breaking, challenging and downright freakish music ever committed to vinyl to kick things off? Then, throw in a design aesthetic that saw many of their sleeves issued not only with unforgettable images but also as gatefold sleeves with all manner of die-cut wizardy, and of course the iconic ‘swirl’ label and inner bag design…..and, from a 2017 perspective, as many of the albums sold in super tiny quantities, it means the label ticks just about every box marked ‘collectable’……
