On This Day in 1966…

51 years ago today, The Supremes achieved their sixth US number one single with the iconic track, You Can’t Hurry Love.

It was released a little under two months prior on the Motown label, and was one of the many classic tracks to be recorded at Hitsville USA in Detroit, Michigan. It was the second single from The Supremes ninth album, The Supremes A’ Go-Go, and also achieved success across the Atlantic by reaching number three in the UK singles chart.

It was one of the most famous songs by The Supremes, and one that highlights the strong gospel element that was prevalent in  in R&B and Soul music at the time. While the song is based around a mothers loving words of encouragement about love, the track was also inspired and influenced by the track (You Can’t Hurry God) He’s Right On Time, which is a ’50s gospel song by Dorothy Love Coates.

Nearly twenty years later, You Can’t Hurry Love would also be a hit for Phil Collins when it was released as single from Hello, I Must Be Going in 1982.
