On this day in 1949…

68 years ago today, on an August night in West Bromwich, the one and only Phil Lynott was born.

Starting life moving around various town in the UK, Lynott would eventually return his family’s Irish roots in Dublin. After being introduced to music early on in life through his uncles record collection, Lynott would form the Black Eagles at the tender age of 16. From there, he would spend time in a number of bands including Skid Row, and later Orphanage with Brian Downey, sowing the seeds of a long lasting musical partnership.

In 1969, Lynott and Downey formed Thin Lizzy, and the rest, as they say, is history. Fueled by Lynott’s trademark galloping basslines, less than tradition song structures and time changes, and unique vocal delivery, Thin Lizzy would go on to become one of the most important bands in rock ‘n’ roll history. Their hits such as The Boys Are Back In Town, Whiskey In The Jar, Jailbreak, and countless others are still revered to this day, and remain a huge influence on rock music.

Thin Lizzy would eventually break up in 1983, and three years later Lynott would sadly pass away aged just 36. His legacy, which includes 12 albums with Thin Lizzy and two solo releases, remains unsullied, and his widely regarded as one of the greatest of all time. Happy Birthday, Phil, wherever you are.
